Thinking of upgrading to a paid LJ account....
As the title says, I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting a paid account here.  But like anything that I have to spend money on, I want to know if it's worth my dollars.

So that being said.....to those of you who have a paid account, please tell me why it would be worth it to upgrade.

Inquiring minds want to know.....

The icons are a big deal for me--you get more automatically with a paid account and then you can upgrade to even more. You won't ever see ads on the site. Supposedly you may have faster load times. You can use the scrapbook feature to post pics, you can post polls, and I think there are some other small features that I'm not thinking of. I don't really *want* to support LJ anymore, but there are some features that I've had for too long to want to function in fandom without them.

Ironically, I'm just about to let my paid account expire because I'm so fed up with the appalling attitude LJ has to its users. I would move to DW entirely if not for fandom...

Ok what about it are you unhappy with?

Start with the fact that all of their recent updates have drastically reduced accessibility every time (making it harder to resize/recolour text, making the site unusable with screenreaders), and they have not cared about this in the slightest. IE the new default comment page that rolled out a year ago is a proven migraine trigger in a sizeable number of people, but there's not even been an acknowledgeable of this.

...No, hang on. The dev responsible for this posted on his journal in Russian mocking everyone having issues. They *really* aren't a company I want to be giving money to.

Sounds like I won't be giving my money to them, then. What other options/places do you recommend? I'll stay here in addition to other places.

I really recommend Dreamwidth, which lots of people are using to mirror their posts from. Also, for LJ, Adblock ;P

Ok - I'll check out Dreamwidth. And what is adblock and where can I get it?

The only thing a paid account ever gave me was a bill I couldn't afford and a handful of new icons. Editing comments used to be a paid account feature, but they extended that to everyone. Reading other people's journals in your own style was one of the things I liked, but now if I can't read it, I'll copy and paste the text into a Word file where I can set the text colour. But what with all the enforced updates and them ignoring their users these days, they'll not get any money from me again.

I use Firefox with the ad blocker addon. I haven't seen an advert for years :)

Save money, buy chocolate instead! Wheeee
