He never got tired of dancing. His favorite time was late at night, with the shadows from passing cars setting the mood. He’d start the playlist of their favorite songs, and then gently take her in his arms. Slowly they’d sway, moving in time to the music. Whatever had happened that day; the little annoyances, the frustrations – they all disappeared when it was just them and the music.
He marveled at her; deep blue eyes, sable hair that slipped silkily through his fingers, a smile that dimmed the sun. He still was amazed that she was in his life. Some people had wealth, others prestige. He had her. He never thought that he would ever be this lucky.
There was never a reason for words. Their bodies were in perfect communion with each other. The music changed and she nestled closer to him, putting her hand up to touch his face. He turned to kiss her palm, inhaling the scent that was uniquely her. They danced slowly, each song giving way to the next.
She closed her eyes and sighed, resting her head on his shoulder. One more turn and he caught a glimpse of the two figures standing in the doorway. Smiling, he put his finger to his lips then gestured for them to come in as the last song ended.
Peter and Elizabeth cocooned him as Neal placed their daughter back in her crib. Peter rested his hand on the back of Neal’s neck as Neal pulled El in front of him and wrapped his arms around her.
“She’s so beautiful,” Peter said softly as he leaned in to kiss Neal’s temple. The three of them gazed at the sleeping baby in awe, watching as her eyes fluttered and she sighed again.
Quietly they left the room, leaving the door slightly ajar. Tonight’s dance may be over, but it promised a future that would never truly end.
